Our Catamaran, Taras

"Taras is the vessel where it all began! In all truth, since 2009 our activities have been systematically carried out on board a fast offshore RIB, but already in the year 2000, our initial explorations were taking place on board the Lady Luna, a motorboat owned by the Cantieri Greco. It is with Taras, however, that a new era of dolphin watching activities and research has begun. Our gorgeous 40 FT research catamaran, built by the LADY-HAWKE shipyard upon specific request of the JDC Project, is now our main research and observation platform. " With a floor area of more than 50 square meters, a sighting turret located at a height of 6 meters, and our state of the art scientific equipment installed, our catamaran is the ideal vessel to study cetaceans in their natural environment. Motorized with two noiselses Volvo Penta 75 HP, Taras allows a cruising speed of 10 knots and a maximum speed of 19 knots, and it can accommodate up to 35 people on board, including the crew. It is the first boat built specifically for Cetaceans and Dolphin Watching activities around the Gulf of Taranto, and it is the very boat that brought Carmelo Fanizza and the Jonian Dolphin Conservation to represent the region Puglia at the MILAN EXPO 2015, where they were selected as one of the 20 best Italian exhibitors. Taras is equipped with a large net in the bow area, which allows our guests to experience an incredibly close contact with the cetaceans. .

Extraordinaria, the new addition to our fleet

"In January 2016, the Jonian Dolphin Conservation acquired a second catamaran, Extraordinaria, as a new addition to our fleet. A second vessel has enabled us to double the monitored area and to collect even more data, thanks to the presence of our visitors on board."
Extraordinaria is Taras’s twin sister. It is another 40 FT catamaran, built by the LADY-HAWKE shipyard, equipped with some innovative features, which allow you to live an extraordinary experience as a "Researcher for a day." Its over 70 square meters floor space and its state of the art scientific equipment, make our catamaran the ideal vessel to study cetaceans in their natural environment. Motorized with two noiselses Volvo Penta 75 HP, Extraordinaria allows a cruising speed of 10 knots and a maximum speed of 19 knots, and it can accommodate up to 35 people on board, including the crew. Unlike Taras, Extraordinaria is not equipped with a net in the bow area, thus providing more surface space, and allowing all our guests to observe the cetaceans from a privileged position. The new hydrophone technology and the expertise of our biologists and our naturalists on board will indeed offer you a unique and highly educational experience.

The Port of Taranto

Ever since this adventure began, our dream was to be able to finance, through the Citizen Science, the structured scientific research campaigns on cetaceans. Since 2018 this dream has become a reality thanks to the contribution of the Ionian Sea Port Authority Authority - Port of Taranto which gave us under concession "The Port of Taranto" a splendid boat of 40 FT. All the activities of Il Porto di Taranto are financed by the JDC Citizen science campaigns and this boat becomes the stage through which our researchers and the cetaceans we study can be observed by our guests embarked on Taras and Extraordinary, our two comfortable bedplates. After an accurate and complete re-tting started in 2017 and lasted about 18 months "The Port of Taranto" represents today the ideal detection platform for our monitoring campaigns carried out in collaboration with the UNIBA Department of Biology and with the Institute of Intelligent Systems for Automation - National Research Council - CNR - ISSIA of Bari The Port of Taranto was built in 2005 re fi tting 2018 by the Emanuele Stanisci Navy Shipyard of Taranto on a specific project aimed at guaranteeing excellent maneuverability, safety and high level performance.

Over 30 m2 of surface area, the comfortable crew room, the large passenger room equipped with windows and the practical aft cockpit as well as the installed scienti fi c equipment make this vessel the ideal vehicle for studying Cetaceans in their natural environment.

Motorized with two 210 Pw Volvo Penta, the Port of Taranto allows a cruising speed of 15 knt s and a maximum speed of 22 knts.

It is the first boat used with research on Cetaceans and promotional activities of the Port of Taranto throughout the Gulf of Taranto.

The equipment and the equipment on board make The Port of Taranto a comfortable boat for the conduct of scientific research campaigns lasting even several days.
